Chimney Smells Like Burning or Smoke? Here Is Why.

Why Does My Chimney Smell?

Chimney odors are a symptom — not the problem itself

A chimney that smells like smoke or has a musty, earthy odor is telling you something. The most common causes are:

Creosote odor in summer: Humid air draws the smell of accumulated creosote back into the living space. The fix is a thorough cleaning combined with a damper upgrade to block the air path when the fireplace is not in use.

Animal or debris odor: Birds, squirrels, and raccoons nest in open chimneys. Their nesting material — and sometimes the animals themselves — decompose and create a powerful odor. A chimney cap prevents future intrusions. Cleaning removes what is already there.

Water and mold: A leaking chimney saturates masonry and encourages mold growth inside the flue or firebox. This produces a musty odor that gets worse after rain.

A smelly chimney is rarely just a nuisance. It usually indicates a maintenance problem — creosote buildup, water intrusion, or animal nesting — that needs to be addressed directly.
